Start with the job your sign needs to do

Before choosing a finish, write down the main purpose of the sign. Is it helping people find a new shop, identifying a reception area or announcing a short promotion? A single clear goal makes the design easier to judge. For a shopfront, begin with the business name and what a first-time visitor needs to recognise. Save longer descriptions for places where people can stop and read.

Look at the shop from the customer’s position

Photograph the frontage from the pavement, the opposite side of the street and the entrance. Notice anything that interrupts the view, such as trees, neighbouring signs or an awning. The International Sign Association identifies size, angle, location, luminance and contrast as important visibility factors. Use those as discussion points with your sign maker rather than selecting a sign only from a close-up mockup.

Decide what belongs on the sign

Make a short list: business name, logo, a useful category and perhaps one contact detail. Then rank those items. If every line looks equally important, the main message may be harder to spot. Ask to see the design at a reduced size as well as full-screen. This is a simple way to notice crowded wording, though it does not replace checking the design against the actual viewing distance.

Plan the day and night appearance

If your business is open after dark, discuss illumination while the layout is being developed. Ask how the face colour and lettering will look when the lighting is off. Send a daytime and evening photo of the frontage if possible. Also agree where cables and power equipment will sit; these practical details are part of the finished appearance.

Prepare a useful first enquiry

Send your logo, the approximate width available, location photographs, delivery city and a few reference images. Explain what you like about each reference: the colour, the depth, the light or simply the shape. Antique Signage can then discuss a suitable service and prepare a quote around your specification. A useful enquiry is clear about the outcome, even if the design is not final yet.
